What is a Buy-back rate?

Some properties have means to generate excess power (e.g. solar panels). If there is an export meter or register installed and connected that excess can be fed back into the national grid and is credited at a Buy-back rate.

Do I get GST on my Buy-back credit?

For any electricity we supply to you, we are required to apply GST to the value of supply.  On the other hand, on the value of electricity you generate and export back to us, GST won't generally apply, as it is considered a supply from you to us for tax purposes.  If you are GST registered though, and the property and equipment you use to generate the electricity are business assets, GST can apply to the value of the exported electricity.  If you are GST registered, please get in touch with us so we can look into this further for you.

How do I get paid for excess power I generate?

You need to have the your metering set up with an export meter or register.
If you're an existing Frank Energy customer, check your app or bill for the Buy-back rate of 11.00c/kwh excluding GST (introduced from 22 February 2022).
If you're not a customer, check out our price finder - and if the results return a 'Buy-back' you're likely to be good to go.
If you're interested in getting solar installed, chat to a local solar generation installer and they can connect you up with the right people. If you already have solar installed and the system is less than 50kW, email us and we'll help you through the process.
